Information on Obesity
Understanding Obesity
Nearly nine million Americans struggle with obesity, according to the American Obesity Association. These individuals aren’t just carrying a few extra pounds. On average, they are 100 pounds overweight and their condition is life-threatening. The word “obesity” refers to weight ranges that are higher than what is healthy for a person’s particular height. Often, obese people also have co-morbidities—conditions that negatively impact their health and longevity. In truly obese people, diet and exercise are not enough to lose weight.
The amount of body fat a person carries is measured by Body Mass Index (BMI). Using BMI, the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) defines four categories of obesity:
- Super obese: Body Mass Index (BMI) of 50+
- Morbidly obese: BMI of 40+ or a BMI of 35+ coupled with an obesity-related disease, such as type 2 diabetes or heart disease
- Obese: BMI of 30 – 39.9
- Overweight: BMI of 25 – 29.9
Causes of Obesity
While unhealthy eating habits are a primary cause of excessive weight, other factors come into play. Genetics, cultural background and immobility due to injury or illness can contribute to obesity. In certain cases, medication or glandular disorders create rapid, unhealthy weight gain.
Risk Factors Associated with Obesity
Obese individuals are at risk for the following conditions:

- Stroke
- High blood pressure
- Cancer
- Type 2 diabetes
- Arthritis
