Heart Surgery

Skilled physicians at South Miami Heart Center Treat Many Different Types of Heart Disease

Our Heart Surgery Experience Centers on You

South Miami Heart Center is strengthened by our affiliation with Baptist Health Cardiac & Thoracic Surgical Group. These highly trained surgeons are some of the best in their field. In fact, they have achieved the highest quality rating of three stars for coronary artery bypass surgery by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) – an accomplishment attained only by the top 14 percent of adult cardiac surgery centers in the United States. The rating is based on such factors as patient survival rates, the number of surgical complications and re-admissions to a hospital. The surgeons are supported by a multidisciplinary team that is trained to care for heart patients. Heart surgery can be a scary experience, but knowing that you’re in the hands of experienced and compassionate healthcare professionals eases some of anxiety that patients experience.

At South Miami Heart Center, our surgeons perform both open heart and minimally invasive surgery, depending on the proper treatment for and health of the patient.  Here are some of the surgeries we offer:

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG)

In many cases, coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is an effective treatment for heart diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD). By correcting a blocked or narrowed artery or arteries, CABG restores blood supply to the heart.  Also called bypass graft surgery or arterial (in the legs and abdomen) bypass surgery, this procedure actually creates a detour around the narrow or blocked part of an artery. It does this by attaching another blood vessel taken from elsewhere in the body. This reroutes the blood so it reaches the heart without obstruction. The blood vessels, or grafts, are sections of a vein taken from the patient’s legs or a chest artery.

Traditional open heart surgery is still performed and is the right choice for some situations. However, new, less invasive techniques are also used to perform bypasses. Two such techniques are minimally invasive procedures using very small incisions and robot-assisted surgery, which is performed with help from a moving mechanical device.

Treatment of Heart Valve Disease

Heart valves control blood flow through each of your heart’s four chambers. Therefore, it is vital that they function properly. If you have heart valve disease, your blood flow may be blocked (stenosis) or may flow in the wrong direction (regurgitation). Surgical repair or replacement of improperly functioning heart valves is one of today’s most common heart operations.
