Making a Difference: Benevolent Donors of South Miami Heart Center at South Miami Hospital
Helping to Change Lives and Save Lives
The generosity of our caring donors has tremendous impact on the health and well-being of our community, enabling the Heart Center at our South Miami Hospital to obtain new technology, to provide further training for employees and to acquire much needed equipment. But more than physical assets, generous donations have created innumerable opportunities to change and save lives in our community though our heart center of South Florida.
Many of South Miami Heart Center’s specialized services have been funded by philanthropic support. The L. Austin Weeks Heart Rhythm Center and Center for Electrophysiology, for example, were made possible by a $10 million donation by the late L. Austin Weeks. Mr. Weeks’ donation also funded a public education campaign about heart rhythm disturbances and their treatment that placed 489 automatic external defibrillators, or AEDs, in all of Miami-Dade County’s public schools.
Additionally, the Foundation’s annual Mercury Ball has raised money to purchase the latest medical technology for the Heart Center. The Foundation also supports the Heart Center’s mission to educate the community about prevention, diagnosis and treatment options for all types of cardiovascular disease.
Founders Society
Several donors who have supported South Miami Heart Center are members of the Founders Society, Baptist Health South Florida’s prestigious donor recognition society. Founders are contributors whose cumulative gifts or pledges to any of the hospital Foundations have reached $50,000. Members of the Founders Society enjoy a camaraderie and sense of mission. Founders are acknowledged and celebrated for their generous support for our hospital in South Miami with a variety of courtesies and honors.
